Anemone quinquefolia, commonly known as wood anemone or windflower, is a perennial wildflower native to North America. It is distinguished by its delicate, white, star-shaped flowers and compound leaves with five leaflets, which give the species its scientific name quinquefolia (“five-leaved”). Its colloquial name “wood anemone” reflects its preference for shaded woodland habitats and its delicate, airy blooms that sway in the slightest breeze. Unlike many wildflowers, it spreads extensively through creeping rhizomes, forming large carpets in forest understories.
