Barbarea vulgaris, commonly known as wintercress or yellow rocket, is a biennial wildflower native to Europe and western Asia. It is recognized by its bright yellow, four-petaled flowers that bloom in early spring and its glossy, lobed leaves forming a basal rosette. The name “rocket” comes from the Old French roquette, referring to its resemblance to arugula. Unlike many early bloomers, Barbarea vulgaris thrives in disturbed and nutrient-rich soils, often appearing along roadsides and riverbanks. Its leaves were once eaten as a spring green, valued for their peppery taste and high vitamin content.
