Lathyrus vernus, commonly known as spring vetchling, is a perennial wildflower native to Europe. It is distinguished by its upright stems and paired leaflets, and by its striking flowers that open reddish-purple and gradually fade to blue as they age. The species name vernus means “of spring,” reflecting its early flowering period. Unlike many climbing members of the pea family, Lathyrus vernus lacks tendrils and stands on its own, giving it a shrub-like appearance in woodland clearings and forest edges.
