Narcissus jonquilla, commonly known as jonquil, is a fragrant, clump-forming wild daffodil native to the Iberian Peninsula. It is recognized by its slender rush-like leaves—reflected in the name jonquilla, derived from the Spanish junquillo (“little rush”)—and its clusters of small, bright yellow flowers. Each bloom carries a strong, sweet scent that distinguishes it from many other wild Narcissus species. Unlike early-spring daffodils, Narcissus jonquilla naturally flowers later in the season, thriving in warm, sunlit meadows and open woodlands where its perfume and vivid color mark one of the highlights of the Mediterranean spring.
