Pulmonaria officinalis, commonly known as lungwort, is a perennial wildflower native to Europe. It is easily recognized by its spotted, silvery-green leaves and clusters of funnel-shaped flowers that shift in color from pink to blue as they mature. The name “lungwort” derives from the Latin pulmo (“lung”) and reflects the old Doctrine of Signatures, which associated the leaf’s spotted pattern with diseased lungs and led to its historical use in herbal medicine. Unlike many spring wildflowers, Pulmonaria officinalis blooms very early, providing one of the first nectar sources for bees emerging after winter.
