Leucojum vernum, commonly known as spring snowflake, is a bulbous perennial native to central and southern Europe. It is easily recognized by its nodding, bell-shaped white flowers, each petal tipped with a small green or yellow mark. The name “snowflake” reflects its early flowering, often coinciding with the melting of winter snow. Unlike similar spring bulbs, it prefers damp meadows and woodland clearings, where it can form striking carpets. Its early blooms provide nectar for bees emerging from winter, making Leucojum vernum both a visual and ecological herald of spring.
